Mirza’s journey to Cambodia began with a simple promise. A recruiter offered him a job with a high salary and all expenses paid, a common lure for individuals seeking better opportunities abroad. Like many others, Mirza was hopeful for a fresh start. He believed that moving to Cambodia would allow him to escape financial difficulties and secure a stable future. However, once he arrived, he quickly realized that he had been tricked.
The criminal group immediately forced Mirza to work for their large-scale scamming operation. His job, however, didn’t match the promise. Instead of performing legitimate work, the group coerced him into participating in fraudulent activities. They tasked him with deceiving other Indonesians, particularly people from his own home region of Aceh, by obtaining their personal data under false pretenses. The operation used this information to steal money and commit various financial crimes.

The mafia group in Cambodia operated well-organized, with hundreds of scammers working for them. Mirza explained that the criminals forced him to clone personal data from victims, and they used it to steal funds through online banking and other fraudulent activities. The criminals employed various tactics to obtain sensitive information, such as posing as government officials or pretending to offer loans.
Mirza described how he was required to clone the data of at least 300 individuals, all of whom were tricked into providing their personal information. The scam involved using advanced technology to sync with the victims’ phones and banking systems, making it easier for the criminals to access their accounts. The scam artists would then steal money from the victims’ bank accounts, leaving them unaware of the theft.
The horror of Mirza’s situation didn’t end with forced labor and scams. They punished him with brutal violence for failing to meet the scamming targets set by the mafia. Mirza revealed that the mafia tortured him, including shocking him with electricity, whenever he didn’t meet the required quotas. The criminals commonly used physical abuse as a tactic to control victims and ensure compliance.
Mirza was not alone in his suffering. Many other workers in the scam network also faced abuse. The criminals trapped them in a vicious cycle of exploitation, forcing them to work under constant threats of violence and intimidation. Mirza said he feared for his life but had no choice but to keep working for the criminals, as any attempt to escape would likely lead to severe consequences.

After enduring weeks of suffering, Mirza found a way to escape. He managed to flee the camp with difficulty. Mirza found a safe route out of Cambodia. He eventually reached the Indonesian embassy for help. He contacted Sudirman Haji Uma, an Indonesian parliament member from Aceh. Haji Uma had been working on his case. Thanks to Haji Uma’s efforts, Mirza returned to Indonesia. He landed at Kuala Namu International Airport on February 2, 2025. Mirza was warmly greeted by Haji Uma and his family.
